Duration:      Refresher Course – 1 day

                        3 Experienced Operators – 3 days

                        2 Experienced Operators – 2 days

                        3 Novice Operators – 5 days

                        2 Novice Operators – 4 days

                        1 Novice Operator – 3 days

Definition:     Experienced = Operators with approx 6 months experience but no certificate

Ratio:             3 Operators:              1 Instructor    :           1 Machine

1.         AIM & OBJECTIVES

            Course Aim:

To provide the theoretical and practical knowledge to safely and efficiently operate an industrial tractor with or without trailers. This syllabus may be applied to pedestrian tow tractors.

Course objectives: By the end of the course successful candidates will:

  • Have retained the required knowledge to be able to pass the associated knowledge test
  • Be able to efficiently inspect the machine and pass the pre-use check examination
  • Have demonstrated relevant skills to be able to pass the basic skills test

2.         ELEMENTS

  The course will comprise of theoretical and practical instruction covering the following:-

 2.1       Responsibilities under the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, PUWER 98 & LOLER 98                       & HSG 136 (Workplace Transport Safety)

2.2       The major component parts and functions of those parts

2.3       Operators Safety Code

2.4       Battery maintenance and charging procedures2.5       Pre-use check on both tractor and trailer(s)

 2.6       The loading and stability of trailers

 2.7       Hitching and unhitching trailers

 2.8       Manoeuvring in open and confined areas (with and without trailers)

2.9       Operate hydraulic controls

3.         KNOWLEDGE

 On completion of training, the candidates will have a theoretical understanding of the following:-

3.1       Responsibilities under the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, PUWER 98, LOLER 98                        & HSG 136 (Workplace Transport Safety)

3.2       Identification and function of the major component parts

3.3       Operators Safety Code

3.4       Battery maintenance and charging procedures

3.5       Pre-use checks

3.6       Factors affecting stability

3.7       Of how to hitch and unhitch trailers

4.         SKILL

On completion of training the student will be able to:-

4.1       Operate the tractor safely and efficiently with and without trailers

4.2       Carry out pre-use checks on both tractor and trailers to ensure the equipment is in a safe condition

 4.3       Carry out battery maintenance and charging procedures

 4.4       Hitch and unhitch trailer safely

 4.5       Loading trailers safely and correctly to maintain stability
