COURSE SYLLABUS
ROUGH TERRAIN VARIABLE REACH AND TELESCOPIC TRUCKS
Ratio: 1 Machine: Up to 3 Trainees: 1 Instructor
Duration:
1 day – Refresher Course / Conversion Course
2 days – Conversion Course for operators with no / limited experience
2 days – 1 or 2 operators with experience but no certificates
3 days – 3 operators with limited experience
3 days – 1 novice operator
4 days – 2 novice operators
5 days – 3 novice operators
Definition: Experienced = Operators with approx 6 months experience but no certificate
1. AIM
To provide the theoretical and practical knowledge to safely operate a Rough Terrain Variable Reach and Telescopic Truck.
2. ELEMENTS
The course will comprise of theoretical and practical instruction on a Rough Terrain Variable Reach or Telescopic Truck covering the following :
2.1 Responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, PUWER 98 & LOLER 98
2.2 Operators safety code
2.3 Battery maintenance charging and refuelling procedures
2.4 Pre-shift checks
2.5 Factors affecting stability
2.6 Motive controls
2.7 Hydraulic controls
2.8 Manoeuvring in open and confined areas and over varying terrain
2.9 Stacking at different levels in open and confined areas
2.10 Destacking with laden and unladen pallets
2.11 Load weight assessment and load moment indicator
2.12 Safe use of attachments (if applicable)
2.13 Lorry loading and unloading
2.14 Post operative checks
3. KNOWLEDGE
On completion of training, candidates will have a theoretical understanding on a Rough Terrain Variable Reach or Telescopic Truck of:
3.1 Their responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, PUWER 98 & LOLER 98
3.2 Operators safety code
3.3 Battery maintenance and refuelling procedures
3.4 Pre-use checks
3.5 Factors affecting stability
3.6 Stacking and destacking /manoeuvring in open and confined areas and over Varying terrain
3.7 Load weight assessment and load moment indicators
3.8 Lorry loading and unloading
3.9 The loading handling envelope
3.10 The safe load indicator
3.11 Attachments available in the workplace (if applicable)
3.12 Post operative checks
4. SKILL
On completion of training on a Rough Terrain Variable Reach or Telescopic Truck the candidate will be able to carry out the following to the required standard:
4.1 Drive and operate the lift truck safety and efficiently
4.2 Stack and destack at various levels in a safe manner in open and confined areas and over varying terrain
4.3 Carry out pre-use checks to ensure the equipment is in a safe condition
4.4 Carry out battery maintenance and refuelling procedures
4.5 Load and unload vehicles
4.6 Operate safely on and over various ground conditions
4.7 Attachments available in the workplace (if applicable)
4.8 Carry out post operative checks
Note: Varying terrain is indoor and outdoor over all surfaces including rough terrain.
Varied work applications: Stacking; De-stacking Transporting; Vehicle/Trailer Loading/Unloading; Operator Safety; Use of Controls. All applications should be specific to the working environment.
