Definition:      Experienced = Operators with approx 6 months experience but no certificate

1. Aim

The aim of this training course is to ensure candidates receive all relevant information and skills to be able to carry out the operations in a safe and competent manner.

2. Elements

The course will comprise of theoretical and practical instruction covering the following:

2.1      Responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act (1974), PUWER (1998), LOLER (1998), (HSG 136), Workplace Transport Safety and The Dock Regulations

2.2      Definitions of accidents, hazards and risks

2.3      Company Profile

2.4      Factors affecting stability

2.5      Identification of components and introduction to the unit

2.6      Daily inspections and fault recording

2.7      Explanation and demonstration of coupling and uncoupling procedures

28      Manoeuvring in open and confined areas (tug)

2.9      Demonstration  of driving

2.10    Explanation and demonstration of coupling and uncoupling procedures

2.11    Manoeuvring in open and confined areas (tug & trailer)

2.12    Safe operations when using goose necks

2.13    Coupling and uncoupling procedures with a maffi

2.14    Safety when working with tankers/live loads

2.15    Safe operations on board ship

2.16    Parking trailers and maffi’s in set parking bays (easy and blind side)

2.17    Positioning trailers for loading ships

2.18    Operators safety code

2.19    Parking and post-stop checks

3. Knowledge

4. Skills

On completion of training the candidate will be able to:-

4.1      Carry out pre-start safety checks and start-up procedures as per Company Policy

4.2      The ability to manoeuvre and operate the tug master, trailer and maffi correctly within the manufacturer’s recommendations and to the operator’s safety code.

4.3      Couple and uncouple a goose neck

4.4      Connect and disconnect from a maffi

4.5      Park trailers and maffi’s in set parking bays (easy and blind side)

4.6      Position trailers for loading ships

4.7      Correctly park, shut-down and secure the vehicle

4.8      Carry out a post-stop inspection
