Refresher Course – 1day

3 Experienced Operators – 3 days

2 Experienced Operators – 2 days

3 Novice Operators – 5 days

2 Novice Operators – 4 days

1 Novice Operator – 3 days

Definition:      Experienced = Operators with approx 6 months experience but no certificate

1. AIM

To provide the theoretical and practical knowledge to drive safely an industrial tractor with or without trailers. This syllabus may be applied to rider tow tractors, pedestrian tow tractors and pedestrian tow tractors with a rider platform. Hence the term “drive” may be substituted by “move” to accommodate both types.

2. ELEMENTS

The course will comprise theoretical and practical instruction on a Tow Tractor covering the following:-

2.1  Responsibilities under the Health & Safety at Work Act, 1974

2.2  Pre-shift chicks

2.3  Preventative maintenance

2.4  Battery maintenance and charging procedures

2.5  Safety code and regulations

2.6 Manoeuvring in open and confined areas

2.7 The loading and stability of trailers

3. KNOWLEDGE

On completion of training on a Tow Tractor students will have a theoretical understanding of the following:-

3.1 Their responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974

3.2 Pre-shift checks and daily maintenance

3.3 The maintenance and charging of batteries

3.4 Safety regulations

3.5 Factors affecting stability

4. SKILL

On completion of training on a Tow Tractor the student will be able to :-

4.1 Carry out pre-shift checks on both tractor and trailers

4.2 Carry out battery maintenance and charging procedures

4.3 Drive and operate the tractor safely and efficiently with or without trailers

4.4 Load trailers safely and correctly to maintain stability
